ONTARIO HOSTELRY INSTITUTE
EVENT MANAGEMENT AWARD

Metro Toronto Convention Centre Event Management Award $2,000


Who Can Apply

  • Centennial College,(Special Events Management elective), George Brown College (Special Events PlanningDestination Tourism), students currently enrolled in their final year of a two-year Event Management diploma. Niagara College (Special Events) or Conestoga College (Event Management) students currently enrolled in their one-year program.
  • Applicants must be Canadian Citizens or Landed Immigrants
  • Applicants must not have received any other Ontario Hostelry Institute Award

PLEASE NOTE: An identical award is being offered by the Metro Toronto Convention Centre through the Canadian Hospitality Foundation (CHF) www.thechf.ca/scholarships.  The OHI and CHF awards will not be awarded to the same student.

How to Apply

Send application to the Ontario Hostelry Institute, 300 Adelaide Street East, Suite 339, Toronto, ON, M5A 1N1. The application form must be accompanied by the following (missing or incomplete documents will be grounds for elimination):

  • Application Form:  must be completed and signed (pen or typewritten submissions only)
  • Official Transcript of Records: your complete academic history at your present college/university. (web grades, academic records, photocopy, emailed or faxed transcripts are NOT accepted)
  • Letter(s) of recommendation from your program instructor and/or administrator has to be signed and must include address, telephone and where possible, email address.
  • Letter(s) of recommendation from your past or current employers (reference letters for volunteer activities will also be considered) has to be signed and must include address, telehone and where possible, email address.
  • A 300-word essay giving reasons why you are drawn to the event management field of the hospitality industry and why you think you will succeed in it. Within your essay also describe where you see yourself professionally five years from now.
  • Resumé

  • The Ontario Hostelry Institute reserves the right to check all references.  Faxed applications and supporting documents will NOT be accepted.

Judging Criteria

Applications are reviewed by the Award sponsor (Metro Toronto Convention Centre) and will be judged on the following criteria. Points assigned to each of the criteria from a total of 100 points are as follows:

  • Work experience (20)
  • Scholastic record (20)
  • Extracurricular activities both in school and in the community (20)
  • Letters of recommendation (20)
  • Essay (10)
  • Other considerations such as presentation quality of application etc. (10)
  • Special financial needs will also be considered


Payment of Award Money

A one-time payment will be made to the college in November of the year the award is received to be credited toward the recipient's tuition fees. If the fees have been paid in full, the award money is to be given to the recipient by the college. The Institute will seek confirmation of graduation from said program. Recipients who did not graduate will forfeit their award payment.

Deadline

Scholarship applications must be received by the Institute no later than Monday, April 30, 2012. Applications received after this date will not be eligible. Names of the award recipients will be posted on the Institute's website www.theohi.ca/scholarships  by August 2012.
